PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education & Personal Development

At Chapelhill Primary PSHE and Personal Development are central to our caring and inclusive ethos. We are committed to nurturing well-rounded, confident, resilient, and empathetic individuals who are equipped to navigate life, form healthy relationships, and thrive in modern Britain.

Our PSHE Curriculum: The Story Project

Our comprehensive PHSE We deliver our PSHE provision meets all statutory requirements and is delivered through a robust blend of high-quality schemes tailored to our pupils. At the heart of our teaching is The Story Project, a literature-led scheme that uses high-quality, diverse children’s books to explore complex social, emotional, and health themes.

Using relatable story characters provides a safe, distance-based approach for pupils to discuss sensitive topics, develop emotional literacy, and practice critical thinking. This literature-based foundation encourages open dialogue, builds empathy, and makes learning meaningful across all key stages.

To ensure a truly holistic approach, our statutory curriculum is enhanced by three specialised programs:

    • Pol Ed: An educational resource deigned to help pupils understand the law, navigate societal rules, and learn how to keep themselves and others safe.
  • My Happy Mind: An evidence- based program grounded in neuroscience that helps children understand their brains, build resilience, and proactively develop positive mental health habits.
  • No Outsiders: A framework that teachers the Equality Act in an age -appropriate way, celebrating diversity, promoting mutual respect, and ensuring every child knows they belong in our school community.

Key Focus Areas

Our comprehensive PSHE and Personal Development provision supports children to:

  • Build Wellbeing & Mental Health: Develop emotional vocabulary, self-regulation, resilience, and positive physical and mental health habits.
  • Form Healthy Relationships: Understand boundaries, consent, respect, and equality in an age-appropriate way.
  • Stay Safe Online & Offline: Learn how to assess risks, stay safe in physical spaces, and practice safe, responsible digital citizenship.
  • Embrace Values & Diversity: Develop a strong understanding of fundamental British values (democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect), celebrate diversity, and appreciate protected characteristics within an inclusive environment.

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)

As part of statutory PHSE Curriculum, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is taught sensitively, inclusively, and age-appropriately. Our RSE provision focuses on the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive, healthy relationships. We aim to equip pupils with the precse vocabulary and knowledge they need to understand their changing bodies, establish personal boundaries, and make safe, informed decisions, working transparently and in close partnership with parents and carers.

Broadening Personal Horizons

Beyond the classroom, personal development is woven into daily school life through whole-school assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities, such as School Council educational visits, and extra-curricular clubs.

Our provision fully meets the Department for Education (DfE) statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and Health Education. It  develops Personal Development by systematically embedding Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development, safeguarding principles, and equality across the school experience
